HR professionals are often called upon to lead and support labour relations in the workplace. This can involve conducting investigations, managing the grievance procedure, and representing their employer during a workplace dispute. What happens when a workplace dispute cannot be resolved? Are you ready to move through the grievance procedure and potentially support or represent your employer at an arbitration hearing?

In this POWER LUNCH series, participants will learn the tools and strategies to prepare for a grievance arbitration hearing, while learning the foundational knowledge of unionization, collective agreements, and grievance procedures in Ontario.

Buckle up! The path to arbitration can be complex, but we will take a deep dive into conflict resolution and case management; and offer HR Professionals a simple roadmap on how to strategically prepare for an arbitration hearing.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the grievance procedure and the difference between arbitration and mediation.
  2. Identify key issues within a workplace dispute or grievance, common collective agreement clauses, and case preparation.
  3. Implement best practices for preparing evidence and documentation to support legal counsel at an arbitration.

Lauren Canzius (she/her) is a seasoned HR professional who has a passion for advancing psychological safety in the workplace. As a thought leader, Lauren has helped educate HR professionals and executives across the country, including the design and delivery of HR curriculum for various universities across the GTA. Lauren currently serves as the Founding Director and Head of the Diversity and Anti-Racism Office (DAO) at a provincial tribunal. She is a sought-after speaker, lecturer, and budding podcaster who empowers organizations to develop sustainable people-first solutions. Lauren's career has included leadership roles in consulting, change management, HR management, labour and employee relations, mediation, and collective bargaining. Lauren holds a Master of Industrial Relations from Queen's University, and an Hons B.A. from the University of Toronto. In her free time, Lauren enjoys volunteering in her community and mentoring youth and new professionals.
